The human body has many marvels and mysteries. It is never boring to learn something new about the human body. For example, there may be a newly discovered organ or part. We are always curious about the functions that each part of our body performs.
Many people think it is easy to walk, run, and jump using only four toes.
They think that the little toe is not very useful. Before you can learn more about the pinky toe, let’s first learn what it is made of and how it functions. The foot is made up of 26 bones, divided into three sections: the midfoot, the forefoot and the hindfoot. The toes make up the forefoot. The small toe is made up of three bones (pharyngeal bone) and the rest of the toes except for the big toe, which has only two bones. The metatarsals connect all the toes to the midfoot. This connection is very similar to the knuckles. Dr. Wenjay Sung of White Memorial Medical Group explained that walking is done in a tripod fashion. The big toe knuckle (connection with the metatarsal), little toe knuckle and the heel give us a tripod walking ability. He explained that the tripod-like walking is caused by the connection between the big toe and metatarsal, the little toe and the heel. Removing the little toe would alter the balance.
